The Airstream

Details: Airstream Sovereign 31 ft, 1971

Family history: The Airstream belonged to Conner’s Uncle Rob, who lived in it for many years prior to his passing in 2017. Since then, the Airstream has sat empty in a trailer park in Duncan BC until we decided to give it a new purpose. We hope to restore, renovate, and make use of it in a way that would make Uncle Rob happy.

The plan: Renovate the Airstream to a livable state. The goal is to get it onto our property on Mayne Island, so that we can spend longer chunks of time on Mayne. While our tiny cabin is great, it doesn’t have a kitchen or washroom so we can only spend a few days at a time on our land. We figure the Airstream can be used for long weekends, guest accommodations, possibly to live in, and then eventually for road trips down the line.

The design: Even though we’re gutting and re-building the interior, we’ve decided to keep the same original layout. We’ll keep the rear bath as it gives plenty of room for a washroom (a luxury for us compared to our composting toilet on Mayne), put a double bed in the bedroom area- probably a custom pull out couch, galley kitchen, and sizable living room. The goal is to have different zones, but keep a pretty open plan layout to maximize the natural light. With the curved walls and multitude of windows, it’s a fantastic shell to build out the interior into something that will hopefully be functional and beautiful once it’s all done!
